About Us: History

Steed Standard Transport Ltd. was founded in 1913 by James "Scotty" Hamilton. Hamilton Cartage started with a horse and wagon delivering coal and lumber. Hamilton bought his first truck in 1920. He soon began hauling gravel and doing household moves around Southwestern Ontario.

In 1928, Hamilton Cartage was renamed Standard Transport after getting its first major contract with Kroehler Furniture.

In 1939, Gordon E. Steed Sr. and his wife Helene (nee Hamilton) were invited to come and help in the business during the war effort. During some of these years, Kroehler's was making wing and tail assemblies for war planes.

Gordon E. Steed Sr. and Helene became the owners of Standard Transport in 1948.

The third generation, Gordon E.'s son Gordon joined the company full time in 1957.

In 1966, Gordon Jr. purchased the business from his father and changed the name to Steed Standard Transport.

In 1988, after being in several locations throughout Stratford, Steed Standard Transport moved into a modern terminal located at 603 Romeo St. South.
